Tyler Everingham confident leading into National Trans Am debut
National Trans Am rookie Tyler Everingham has left his maiden test in the Dream Racing Australia Chevrolet Camaro confident of a strong result at AWC Race Tasmania.
Everingham completed a full-day test at Winton working with the Dream Racing Australia team where he adjusted to the characteristics of a Trans Am.
“Probably the big difference is the Trans Am being left-hand-drive for me,” he remarked.
“That was a bit of a battle to get used to, I’ve driven left-hand-drive before, but just getting used to it again as it’s been a while, though by the end of the day I was pretty comfortable in it and we got there by the end of the day.”
Another adjustment required is the switch to a four-speed H-pattern gearbox, but Everingham made it seamlessly.
“I have driven a few old Supercars with the H-pattern dogbox in them, but it is a bit of a change and a different approach to just slow everything down with the four-speed by not rushing the downshifts to ensure I get all the little things right,” he explained.
“First time out it surprised me how much the car moves around, but as soon as learnt to deal with it and ride the tyre we were pretty quick leaving us happy with the day.”
Although Everingham is comfortable in his Dream Racing Australia Chevrolet Camaro, he hasn’t raced in Tasmania for some time.
“The last time I drove at Symmons Plains was when I was 15 and driving in Formula 4, so it’s been a while,” Everingham stated.
“I’ll study the track a bit, watch some onboard and prepare as best I can. It’s been a bit of a rush trying to get everything ready, but after the test day I feel confident.”
One advantage he does have is the experience Dream Racing Australia hold and it’s already paid dividends according to Everingham as developments were made ahead of AWC Race Tasmania.
“Being able to jump in the car and feel not only comfortable, but confident with the team straight away was good,” Everingham reflected.
“We threw a few different things at the car during the day and found a couple of improvements so I’m definitely confident heading into Tasmania. I’ve got the team behind me, it’s just about me getting the result.”
Although setting modest aims, Everingham is expecting to mix it with Trans Am’s regular frontrunners.
“The goal is definitely to keep improving, but I’d also like to be at the pointy end, though I’m going up against a lot of experienced guys in those cars,” said Everingham.
“It’s all about doing our best as quickly as we can.”
Everingham will make his National Trans Am Series debut at AWC Race Tasmania on February 24-26.
