The Trans Am cars, featuring famous nameplates like the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger, will compete in a special invitational race at the southern Tasmanian circuit in January as part of the brand-new ‘Race Tasmania’ week of motorsport in The Apple Isle.

A cool $10,000 will be awarded to the winner of the Tasmanian Ten Thousand in late January, with $20,000 more on offer for drivers placing second to 10th.

This race will be the return of the Tasmanian Ten Thousand, a classic race first held on the Baskerville circuit in 1975 for Sports Sedans. In the 1970s heyday of Sports Sedan racing, drivers including Allan Moffat, Jim Richards, Bob Jane, John McCormack and Garry Rogers competed in the Ten Thousand.

The Trans Am 10,000 will be one of the richest Australian motorsport events seen in many years.

The Baskerville event will be the second event held as part of Race Tasmania, following the opening race at Symmons Plains Raceway on Australia Day.

Tickets for the events are on sale now, with 5,000 spectators permitted into the venues each day.

Barry Rogers, one of the key influences behind Race Tasmania, says that the Trans Am event will be one not to miss.

“Symmons Plains is the better known venue, and that will be run on Australia Day, but we were really keen to include the southern part of Tasmania with Baskerville,” Rogers said. 

“It’s an iconic track, fantastic for spectators with an amphitheatre set up. It’s only 2km long built in a valley, cars can park in there and get a great view.

“It will be a big Trans Am weekend down there. We are going to reinvigorate the Tasmanian Ten Thousand. They’ll be $30,000 in prize money for the Trans Am boys. They’ll be qualifying races through Saturday and early Sunday a big final on Sunday. It will be worth $10K to win and $30k overall. 

“Unfortunately, $10k today certainly isn’t worth as much as it was was in the 1970s, but it will be a great incentive and it will be a great event for the Trans Ams.”

Joining the Trans Am competitors at Baskerville will be non-championship races for TCR Australia cars, as well as demonstrations for the S5000 open wheel race cars.

Race Tasmania kicks off at Symmons Plains on January 24-26, followed by Baskerville Raceway’s event on January 29-31.
