Nathan Herne and Owen Kelly emerge fastest on opening day of Turtle Wax Trans Am

Reigning Turtle Wax Trans Am Series winner Nathan Herne and protagonist turned Garry Rogers Motorsport teammate Owen Kelly have set the fastest time in the two practice sessions at AWC Race Tasmania.

In the opening session, Herne led another teammate in the form of local Lochie Dalton by setting a 53.9117 lap, 0.2617s clear of his fellow Ford Mustang driver.

Ashley Seward Motorsport’s new recruit Brett Holdsworth ran third in his Chevrolet Camaro ahead of Kelly, the All American Auto Parts and Driveline Mustang of Ben Grice and Kyle Gurton.

After scoring third place in last year’s title, Tim Brook placed seventh in his Wall Racing Mustang, with local Tim Shaw next in his Camaro, while Nash Morris in his Supercheap Auto entry and debutant Elliott Barbour in the lead Dream Racing Australia Chevrolet rounded out the 10.

In the second session, Kelly recorded a 53.9404s lap time to lead Brook by the barest of margins, 0.0230s to be exact.

Holdsworth maintained third ahead of Herne and Gurton.

Morris led home Grice, Dalton, Nic Carroll returning in the Hogan Prestige Cars Dodge Challenger, while Barbour remained in the 10.

Turtle Wax Trans Am action resumes tomorrow at 1:55pm AEDT for qualifying ahead of the opening race of the season at 3:45pm AEDT.
